I would like to extend my prayers to Allen Matheson's family. I am deeply sorry for your loss. Allen was a wonderful person and a good friend. I was his classmate at CVCC's Paramedic program. I know he loved his fire department. He spoke of it highly. I am also a fire fighter and EMT at Grace Chapel Fire in Granite Falls. I know where he comes from in regard for the love of the fire service. My prayers also goes out to the other victims and their families that was also affected. I know it will be a long tough road ahead so i will keep all of those affected in my prayers and God will help you all persevere. God Bless you all you have my deepest sympathy

I would like to share a story with you about growing up in McGrady before there was a Fire Dept. My Mom and Dad's (Bryce and Mary Taylor) home and store burned. The store is now owned by Glen Shepherd. I was in 3rd grade at Mulberry Elementary (1961) At the end of the day I got on the school bus as usual to come home and headed for a back seat on the bus, but for some reason Donna Royal asked me to sit with her in one of the front seats. This was very unusual, because the younger children always sat in the back seats. I now know she had heard about the fire and was trying to protect me the best she could from what I was about to see when I stepped off the bus. The feeling was devastating to see my home burned down. I have never forgotten Donna's kindness. A few years later there was a grassroots movement to start a volunteer fire dept. I remember bake sales, bar-b-que dinners, and raffles to raise the money needed. If there had been a fire dept then, I feel sure that some of our possessions could have been saved.

When I ran across this web site, it made me proud to have grown up in McGrady and knew that I had to share my memory of the devastating feeling one gets when we lose our home to a fire.
